Under the terms of the deal, Euronews’ English language edition and Africanews’ English language edition are now available on the fuboTV platform in the US.

Euronews says that with this latest move, it continues to grow its presence in the OTT market in North America. Commenting on the development, Maxime Carboni, director of worldwide distribution at Euronews, said: “We are very excited about this cooperation with fuboTV. Expanding our reach in North America in the OTT market with a strong partner like fuboTV fits in perfectly with our successful business and audience growth strategy, which has been transforming our access to US consumers across the last 2 years. News continues to be an audience driver for the Live TV experience and a place where innovation is critical. Cartoonito to rollout across Europe

Thomas the Tank Engine and his Friends are steaming into Europe as part of the development of Cartoonito in the region.

WarnerMedia’s preschool brand is launching as a linear channel across EMEA. It already exists as a linear channel in the UK, where Cartoonito built its audience share in 2021, in Italy and, as a programming block in the Middle East and Turkey, will debut a new look in these regions alongside a growing slate of new and library series and exciting global acquisitions set to launch across EMEA. Last autumn, a branded block launched on HBO Max in the Nordics.

The programming slate also includes Lucas the Spider (pictured), Little Ellen, Mush, and Mush and the Mushables.

Vanessa Brookman, Senior Vice President, Kids & Family EMEA for WarnerMedia said: “Cartoonito’s EMEA rollout builds the brand’s global presence and reaffirms our commitment to our preschool audience. With a truly educational philosophy at its heart, the brand offers a safe space where preschoolers are free to be themselves in all their unique, unfiltered glory. We are excited to introduce Cartoonito’s diverse, authentic and relatable storytelling to a new generation of kids and their parents.”

The Cartoonito brand launched in the United States in September.

Ziggo Sport acquires exclusive rights to the Rugby World Cup

Ziggo Sport has acquired the exclusive rights to live matches from the Rugby World Cup 2023. Dutch viewers will be able to enjoy the competition in their own time zone as the host nation is France.

The package includes include the postponed Rugby World Cup 2021 for women, the Rugby World Cup Sevens, the World Rugby WXV 2023 (new women’s international tournament) and the HSBC World Rugby Seven Series.

Ziggo has been the home of the Six Nations, the northern hemisphere’s prestigious rugby championship that began this weekend.

“The enthusiasm of the fans in the completely sold-out stadiums, the physical exhaustion on the field and the mutual sportsmanship make rugby one of the most beautiful spectator sports that sports lovers appreciate,” says Marcel Beerthuizen, director of Ziggo Sport. “With our programming, we are trying to retain the widest possible audience and are constantly working to further strengthen our rights package. That’s why I’m pleased that we can offer our viewers such a large and appealing tournament as the Rugby World Cup.”

The current defending champion is South Africa.

TVN Discovery starts info campaign

TVN Discovery Group has launched an information campaign designed to make the public aware that the licence for Poland’s most popular entertainment channel TVN7 will shortly expire.

In a statement, it says: “Several days remain until the expiry of the current licence, and the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) has not yet made a decision to grant a licence for another period, despite the broadcaster meeting all the conditions”.

It adds that “viewers can express their solidarity with the channel by asking the KRRiT for an immediate licence”.

The campaign began on TVN7 on February 8 and is being extended to all of the group’s channels on February 9.

Broadband TV News notes that the KRRiT is holding back on awarding TVN7 a terrestrial licence, echoing a similar situation that existed last year for the flagship TVN that could have resulted in Discovery being forced to exit the Polish market. This was only averted at the last moment when President Andrzej Duda vetoed the so-called ‘Lex TVN’.

Although TVN7 recently received a Dutch cable and satellite licence, it will no longer be available terrestrially in Poland if it fails to secure a licence from the KRRiT.

Bulsatcom dismisses bankruptcy reports

The Bulgarian operator Bulsatcom has denied recent reports in the local and international media that the company is facing bankruptcy.

In an official statement provided to Broadband TV News, it said: “With its 35% market share Bulsatcom is Bulgaria’s undisputed pay-TV market leader, as well as the country’s third largest provider of broadband services. The company is a financially stable, growth-oriented and strongly performing asset, controlled by a group of top-tier institutional investors, such as BlackRock, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Blantyre Capital, the Bulgarian Development Bank and Integral Venture Partners. In March 2020, after having completed a financial restructuring of the company, the investors’ group brought in new professional management, led by Stanislav Georgiev as a CEO, to push through measures to operationally restructure the company, stabilise its financial performance and steer the business back to growth. At present the measures bear fruit, namely Bulsatcom is on a successful track to upgrade its DTH clients to interactive TV (via network-agnostic IPTV and streaming services), delivers to its clients rich and diverse content portfolio, including its own movie channels, a channel dedicated to Bulgarian sports, numerous 4K channels, as well as an Android TV-based service. “b-box” is arguably among the most advanced and feature-packed products in the region, also capable to cater to the Bulgarian diaspora abroad.

“Bulsatcom’s founders and former co-owners started the company as a family-run, small-town cable TV distributor some 17 years ago. Within just a decade they steered the company towards a market dominant position, initially by offering satellite-based TV services and later on, IPTV. Despite its undisputed market leadership, Bulsatcom temporarily struggled through a period of some financial instability in the years 2016-2019. The founders and then co-owners of the company undertook two ambitious projects, foreign to the core-business of the company. They invested in two simultaneous, internally competing and investment-intensive ventures: launched their own satellite, called “Bulgaria Sat”, as well acquired a 4G licence and established an MNO. Financed by loans that were only partially served, the two ventures eventually brought Bulsatcom to a financial hardship, which demanded the intervention by the company’s creditors, resulting in financial restructuring. BlackRock, Blantyre Capital and EBRD recognised the market leader Bulsatcom as a promising opportunity to enter this Eastern European market and opted, along with the Bulgarian Development Bank, also an institutional investor, to invest and transform the company back into the financially and operationally stable asset that it is today.

“Bulsatcom’s retained market leadership, its recovered financial stability and its constantly improving business performance motivated also one of Bulsatcom’s former co-owners, a minority shareholder after the restructuring, to attempt to reacquire the company. What ensued was an unsuccessful execution of a pre-determined buy-back option in Dec 2020, due to a lacking approach. Disputes in court followed, as well as multiple public statements and legal actions, seemingly aimed to destabilise and devalue the asset, in order to reduce Bulsatcom’s attractiveness to other investors.

“Most recently, pulling out a previously unannounced “Golden parachute” and combining it with some inflated invoices issued by friendly companies, which Bulsatcom refused to recognise, the former owner submitted a claim for insolvency of Bulsatcom to the Bulgarian court. This tactic is unfortunately not unpopular in the Bulgarian business and legal environment, where the submission of such claims is simply the matter of a court fee of £110. With regards to this claim, Bulsatcom’s management remains confident that the truth will prevail and that the Bulgarian court will very soon rule this insolvency claim as unsubstantiated.

“Today Bulsatcom is operationally well capitalised and benefits from close engagement and continued financial support from its investor group. The company stays firmly in its market-leader position, constantly expanding its TV channels content portfolio and curating prime drama titles in its self-run movie channels action.box, cine.box and comedy.box, with the mission to deliver the best TV entertainment to its clients’ homes. Under its new management, Bulsatcom has been the first operator to introduce in Bulgaria Eurosport 4K, the Turkish-drama channel Dizi, BBC Earth, LoveNature 4K. Using innovative broadcast technologies, Bulsatcom was the first company to deliver live coverage of the cycling tour of Bulgaria on its b1b.box channel, fully dedicated to promoting and broadcasting Bulgarian sports”.

DW, VoA and Euronews facing Turkish ban

Turkey has given three international broadcasters a deadline of 72 hours to apply for local licences or be taken off the air.

“Deutsche Welle, Voice of America and Euronews have been given a deadline of 72 hours by the RTÜK. They must apply for a broadcast licence within that period or face a broadcast ban,” said Okan Konuralp, a member of the Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) on Twitter.

At issue are the broadcasters’ websites that have drawn the attention of the authorities because they also feature video news. Such websites have become increasingly popular in Turkey as the government places restrictions on local news outlets.

If the broadcasters don’t apply for a licence the regulator has the right to go to court and get the website closed down.

RTÜK is expected to publish a decision in the next 7 to 10 days.

The decision is likely to be a political one because the majority of the RTÜK’s board members are from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party.

RTÜK has been responsible for the regulation of online content since 2018. Streaming platforms including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have successfully obtained licences.

PPF Group to buy RTL Croatia

RTL Group has agreed to sell 100% of its Croatian operation to PPF Group’s subsidiary CME for €50 million.

As part of the transaction, which is subject to regulatory approvals from the Croatian Competition Authority and Croatian Agency for Electronic Media and expected to close in the second quarter of 2022, CME has secured the long-term rights to retain the use of the RTL brand in Croatia.

Broadband TV News notes that the transaction marks a return for CME to Croatia. In July 2018, it received final regulatory approval to sell its assets in the country to Slovenia Broadband, a subsidiary of United Group.

Meanwhile, RTL Group has been the majority shareholder of RTL Croatia since its establishment in 2004, and since July 2015 it has been fully owned by the company.

Commenting on the transaction, Didier Stoessel, CME CEO for Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia, said:
“As a PPF company, we are always open to interesting ideas for growth and investment and see that the Adriatic is a growing region with exceptional potential. We have a very successful operation with ProPlus in the region and I believe that these two Adriatic countries can work well in parallel. As in our other countries,we will focus on digitalisation and local content creation, while continuing to excel in pluralistic and high-quality journalism”.

Elmar Heggen, COO and deputy CEO of RTL Group, added: “We would like to thank the management and all employees of RTL Croatia for their performance, passion and commitment. Over the past 18 years, RTL Croatia has grown from the first commercial channel in the country into an entertainment company with a family of eight TV channels, digital services and its own music label. RTL Croatia’s journalistic offer is and will remain essential for the media pluralism in the country”.

Heggen continued: “With its clear regional focus on Central and Eastern Europe and its commitment to editorial independence and integrity, CME is well equipped to further develop RTL Croatia. The sale is in line with our consolidation strategy and the best strategic option for RTL Croatia, its dedicated team and our shareholders”.

RTL Croatia’s three free-TV channels – RTL Televizija (family, general interest), RTL 2 (classic movies, series and sports) and RTL Kockica (children) – form the leading family of TV channels in Croatia, which is complemented by the pay-TV channels RTL Living, RTL Passion, RTL Crime and RTL Adria as well as RTL Croatia World, a dedicated channel for Croatians living abroad. The business unit also operates the streaming services Play and Play Premium, several digital services and the music label RTL Music.
